Ester Kwon is a ceramicist and educator born in Dongducheon, South Korea and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She works as a teacher and the Studio Manager of Gasworks NYC. When she’s not loading kilns and instructing students of all ages, she gets out of the city every chance she gets to fire her work in wood and soda kilns nearby and afar.

I love the way that a life in clay connects me to others, time, and place. Growing up, my mother had a curio cabinet filled with ceramics and other small tchotchkes. Many of the wares she collected represented the birthplace she left behind to start a journey elsewhere. After college, I felt compelled towards the pottery craft, to explore the histories, rituals, and objects that felt fundamental to my upbringing. Since diving in, I’ve become more fascinated by nature, learning, community, and the finer details of the everyday. It is an endless discovery that keeps me going.
